Pregnancy Week 19: What to Expect This Week
Pregnancy Week 19 often feels like a bit of a sweet spot—you’re (hopefully) past the nausea and not quite into the third trimester waddle. Your bump is taking shape, your baby’s doing all sorts of exciting things inside, and you might even be able to feel them dancing on your bladder already. Cute.
Let’s look at what’s happening this week.
Baby at Pregnancy Week 19
Your baby is now around 24cm long and weighs about 250g—about the size of a beef tomato or a Game Boy (depending on your age and snack of choice).
Here’s what’s happening developmentally:
Vernix caseosa, a white waxy coating, is forming on baby’s skin to protect it from wrinkling in the amniotic fluid
Sensory development is in full swing—baby’s brain is growing areas for taste, smell, sight, and hearing
Baby’s arms and legs are in proportion now, and they’re kicking, stretching and rolling
If you’re lucky, you might feel those first proper flutters—or even a gentle kick
Genitals are now developed enough to be seen on a scan (if you want to know)
Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 19
As baby grows and your uterus stretches, you may start noticing:
Round ligament pain—a sharp pulling feeling when you move too quickly
Backache, especially in the lower back
Stretching or itchy skin as bump expands
Increased discharge (totally normal, but wear a liner if it’s bothering you)
Heartburn, particularly in the evenings
Feeling warm all the time—your blood volume is up, and your internal thermostat is rebelling
Top tip: Soothe itchy skin and support your stretching bump with our silky Pregnancy Massage Oil. Apply after a bath or shower, or ask your partner for a gentle massage before bed.

What to Do at Pregnancy Week 19
This is a good week to settle in and start thinking ahead—without panicking.
Your 20-week scan is coming up—check you’ve got the date and time confirmed
Begin researching antenatal classes, especially if you’d like to start in your third trimester
Invest in a good pregnancy pillow or wedge for sleep support
If you’re noticing swelling, try elevating your feet when resting and staying hydrated
Take a moment to connect with baby—hands on bump, a bit of music, or just a quiet pause in the day
Honest Midwife Thoughts
Pregnancy Week 19 is that beautiful in-between time. You’re pregnant enough to feel it—emotionally and physically—but birth still feels a little abstract.
This is the perfect time to start learning more about what’s coming, without feeling rushed. The more you understand what your body is doing (and why), the more confident and calm you’re likely to feel later on.
You don’t need to know it all today. But a little info goes a long way—especially when it comes from someone who’s seen it all and has no agenda except supporting you.
