Pregnancy Week 18: What to Expect This Week
Pregnancy Week 18 is when things start to feel properly real. Your bump might be showing (or at least making your jeans think twice), baby is busy moving around, and you might find yourself saying “I’m pregnant” out loud with a bit more confidence—and a lot more breathlessness.
Let’s see what’s happening this week.
Baby at Pregnancy Week 18
Your baby is now around 14cm long and weighs about 200g—roughly the size of a bell pepper or a croissant (depending on your mood).
Here’s what’s going on inside:
Baby’s nervous system is developing fast, and they’re starting to develop reflexes
Their ears are now in place and working—so they can hear your heartbeat, voice, and even loud noises outside the womb
Bones are hardening, and limbs are more coordinated
If you haven’t felt movement yet, it could happen any day now—especially if this isn’t your first baby
They’re practising yawning, hiccuping, sucking, and swallowing. In short: they’re very busy in there
Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 18
Things are stretching, shifting and sometimes twinging. You might be feeling:
Lower back pain or an achy pelvis
Round ligament pain—sharp little pulls when you move quickly
More obvious bump growth
Headaches, which are still common at this stage
Increased discharge
Tiredness, although hopefully less intense than in the first trimester
Top tip: A little self-care goes a long way this week. Try a gentle bump massage with our Pregnancy Massage Oilor a cooling foot rub with Thankful Ankle Oil—especially if your legs are starting to ache in the evenings.
What to Do at Pregnancy Week 18
You’re close to that big halfway milestone, so this is a great week to take stock and look ahead:
If you haven’t had it yet, your 20-week scan will be coming up soon—get the date in your diary
Start exploring antenatal class options, especially if you want to begin in the next month or so
Keep hydrated and move gently to ease any muscle tightness
Make a list of any questions you have for your next midwife appointment
Take 5 minutes each day to connect with baby—hands on bump, music, or just a quiet moment
Honest Midwife Thoughts
At Pregnancy Week 18, you might feel a little caught between stages. The first trimester is behind you, but you’re not quite at the big “I’m definitely pregnant” stage either—especially if you’re not showing much yet or haven’t felt baby move.
That’s OK.
This middle stretch is a great time to start getting curious about birth and parenting—before things get too real (or too exhausting). You don’t have to dive in all at once, but starting now gives you time to absorb what you need, in a way that feels calm and manageable.
