Safe Travel Tips During Pregnancy

Safe Travel Tips During Pregnancy

Whether it’s a babymoon, a business trip or a weekend visit to family, travelling while pregnant can feel like a mix of excitement and anxiety. But with the right planning, travel during pregnancy can be perfectly safe and even enjoyable.

Here’s everything you need to know to help you travel safely and comfortably, wherever your journey takes you.

When Is the Best Time to Travel During Pregnancy?

Generally, the second trimester (weeks 13 to 27) is considered the safest and most comfortable time to travel. By this stage:

  • Morning sickness has usually eased off
  • Energy levels are higher
  • The bump is showing but not too big to get in the way of movement

Airlines and travel insurance providers often have their own cut-off points for flying during pregnancy, typically around 36 weeks for a single pregnancy and 32 weeks for twins. Always check before you book.

Flying While Pregnant – Is It Safe?

Yes, flying during pregnancy is safe for most women with uncomplicated pregnancies. But there are a few key things to keep in mind:

Before You Fly:

  • Check airline policies: Most UK airlines require a fit-to-fly letter from your midwife or GP if you’re 28+ weeks pregnant.
  • Get travel insurance that covers pregnancy-related care and potential changes to plans.
  • Consult your midwife or GP before any long-haul travel.

During the Flight:

  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water and avoid too much caffeine.
  • Wear compression socks to help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Move regularly – aim to stretch or walk every hour to boost circulation.
  • Choose an aisle seat for easier access to the loo and to stretch your legs.

Car Travel During Pregnancy

Car travel is usually fine throughout pregnancy but comfort and safety are key.

Top Car Travel Tips:

  • Always wear your seatbelt correctly – the lap belt should go under your bump and the shoulder strap between your breasts.
  • Take breaks every 90 minutes to stretch your legs and use the loo.
  • Keep snacks, water and any pregnancy medication close by.
  • Adjust your seat for extra lumbar support if needed.

What to Pack for Travel While Pregnant

Your travel essentials may look a little different now. Pack smart with:

  • Maternity notes or your NHS pregnancy record
  • Any prescription medication or vitamins
  • Healthy snacks and plenty of water
  • Compression socks
  • A light scarf or blanket for comfort
  • Hand sanitiser and face masks (especially on public transport or planes)

Can I Travel Abroad While Pregnant?

Yes, but always do a little extra homework:

  • Check travel advice on the NHS Fit for Travel website, especially for Zika-affected countries
  • Avoid destinations with limited access to medical care
  • Look into language barriers or local medical practices in case of emergencies
  • Stay up to date on vaccination guidance, some may not be recommended in pregnancy

Top Tips for Stress-Free Travel in Pregnancy

  • Allow extra time for everything from airport queues to rest stops
  • Listen to your body, rest when you need it
  • Pack light and ask for help with heavy bags
  • Wear loose, breathable clothes and supportive shoes
  • Always let your midwife know about any travel plans, especially if you’re further along

The Honest Midwife’s Note

Pregnancy isn’t a barrier to travel but it does call for a bit of planning. If anything feels off, like swelling, spotting or unusual pain while travelling, don’t wait and get checked. It’s always better to be cautious, especially away from home.
