9 Weeks Pregnant – Baby’s the Size of a Grape and You’re… Exhausted

9 weeks pregnant - embryo development with visible head, arms, and legs forming

You’re 9 weeks pregnant, and it might be starting to feel a bit more real – even if you’re still keeping the secret (and surviving on crackers, naps and pure willpower).

This is often one of the more intense stages of the first trimester. There’s a lot going on inside, but you might still look exactly the same on the outside — apart from the odd moment of green-faced nausea or crying at an M&S advert.

Here’s what to expect this week.

👶 Your Baby at 9 Weeks Pregnant

Right now, your baby is about 2.5cm long — roughly the size of a grape. They’re growing at a fast pace, and their body is starting to look a little more recognisably baby-shaped.

Inside the womb:

💓 Baby’s heart is beating loud and fast — around 160–170 beats per minute

🧠 The brain is developing rapidly — around 100 new brain cells are forming every minute

✋ Fingers and toes are starting to separate

👁️ Eyelids are covering the eyes

🐣 External genitalia are beginning to form (but still not distinguishable on scan)

They’re also starting to move around a little — you won’t feel it just yet, but it’s all happening.

🤰 Symptoms at 9 Weeks Pregnant

Let’s be honest: Week 9 can be rough. You might feel tired, sick, bloated and emotional — all before lunch.

Common symptoms at 9 weeks include:

Nausea (with or without vomiting)

Extreme tiredness (the I need a nap after a shower kind)

Mood swings or crying for no reason

Food aversions or strong cravings

Metallic taste in your mouth

Tender or tingling boobs

Gas, bloating, and all the glamorous stuff

💡 Top tip: Don’t worry about eating “perfectly” right now. If all you can manage is beige carbs, you’re not failing — you’re surviving.

📅 What to Do at 9 Weeks Pregnant

There’s not loads to do this week, but here are a few gentle steps to stay on track:

Keep taking your folic acid (or methylfolate) and vitamin D

Stay hydrated (tiny sips all day if nausea’s a problem)

Contact your midwife or GP if you haven’t had your booking appointment yet

Start jotting down any questions for your midwife — it’s okay if you’ve got loads

Rest whenever you can — genuinely, this is the work

And if you feel up to it, you can start thinking about birth preparation down the line — especially with a free, pressure-free class like ours 👇
