12 Weeks Pregnant – First Trimester Milestone

author-img Louise 13 February 2025 2 Comments

You’re 12 weeks pregnant — and for many, this week marks the end of the first trimester, a bit of a turning point during pregnancy week 12.

You might have had (or be heading for) your first scan, that magical moment where things start to feel real. Seeing your baby wriggle around on the screen, even if you can’t feel a thing yet, is an emotional and unforgettable moment.

Whether you’re feeling excitement, relief, anxiety or all three within the same minute — that’s completely normal.

Here’s what to expect in week 12 of pregnancy.

👶 Your Baby at 12 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby is around 5–6cm long, about the size of a plum. All the major organs are now formed and will keep maturing over the coming months. And while baby still has lots of growing to do, they’re already moving, swallowing, and developing their reflexes during pregnancy week 12.

Some amazing things happening this week:

🧠 Nerve cells are multiplying fast

👃 Their nose, lips, and eyelids are becoming more defined

💪 Muscles are growing — baby can curl toes and open/close fingers

💓 The heartbeat is strong and can be seen clearly on a scan

Your placenta is now taking over most of the hormone production, which might give your body a bit of a break.

🤰 Pregnancy Symptoms at 12 Weeks

Some early pregnancy symptoms may be starting to ease (though not for everyone). If you’ve been struggling with nausea, fatigue or emotional ups and downs, there’s a good chance things may begin to level out over the next few weeks of pregnancy week 12.

At 12 weeks, you might notice:

Nausea easing or fading

A small bump beginning to show

More energy returning (fingers crossed!)

Constipation or bloating

Headaches

Tender or growing breasts

If your symptoms haven’t let up yet — don’t worry. Everyone’s timeline is different.

📅 The 12-Week Scan

This week often brings the dating scan, where your baby is measured, checked over, and (if you choose) screened for certain chromosomal conditions like Down’s syndrome. It’s significant during week 12 of pregnancy.

It’s a big appointment — and sometimes a big emotional release. You might cry, laugh, feel numb, or be completely overwhelmed. All of that is normal.

📝 If you haven’t had your scan yet, it’s usually done between 11 and 14 weeks — so it’s worth double-checking with your midwife if you haven’t received your appointment details.
