My Baby’s Head Is Engaged – What Does That Mean?

If you’ve been told that your baby’s head is engaged, you might be wondering what that actually means. You might also wonder whether labour is about to start.

It’s one of those pregnancy phrases that sounds important, but doesn’t always come with a clear explanation. So, let’s break it down—what it means when baby’s head is engaged, how to know if it’s happening. We will also discuss whether it means labour is close!

What Does It Mean When Baby’s Head Is Engaged?

When a midwife says your baby’s head is engaged, it means that your baby has moved down into the pelvis. This movement happens in preparation for birth.

✅ This happens in late pregnancy, usually in the last few weeks before labour starts.
✅ The baby’s head settles into the lowest part of your uterus. This position is the best for birth.
✅ It’s a good sign that your body is getting ready for labour. However, it doesn’t mean labour is about to start immediately.

When Does a Baby’s Head Usually Engage?

📌 First pregnancy? Baby’s head often engages from 36-38 weeks.
📌 Had a baby before? Some babies don’t engage until just before labour starts.

For some women, engagement happens gradually over weeks, while for others, the baby drops into place quite suddenly.

💡 Every pregnancy is different! Some babies engage early and stay there, while others bob in and out before finally settling down.

How Do You Know If Your Baby’s Head Is Engaged?

Some women feel baby’s head engaging, while others don’t notice any obvious changes. Here are some signs:

✅ Increased pelvic pressure – You might feel heavier down below.
✅ Easier breathing – Baby is lower, meaning less pressure on your ribs and lungs.
✅ More waddling – Walking might feel different as baby’s head puts more pressure on your pelvis.
✅ Frequent toilet trips – More pressure on your bladder = more trips to the loo!
✅ Less heartburn – With baby lower, there’s less pressure on your stomach.

💡 Your midwife can confirm engagement by gently feeling your bump—this is called palpation.

What Does “1/5, 2/5, 3/5 Engaged” Mean?

Midwives often record engagement as fractions out of 5. This refers to how much of baby’s head can still be felt above the pelvis.

5/5 engaged = Baby’s head is completely free and not yet engaged.
✅ 3/5 engaged = Baby’s head is partially engaged in the pelvis.
✅ 1/5 or 0/5 engaged = Baby’s head is deeply engaged, almost ready for labour!

💡 The lower the number, the deeper baby’s head is in the pelvis.

Does Engagement Mean Labour Is Close?

Not necessarily! Engagement is a sign that your body is preparing for birth. However, it doesn’t mean contractions will start straight away.

✅ Some babies engage weeks before labour.
✅ Others don’t fully engage until labour begins.
✅ If baby’s head is engaged AND you’re having regular contractions, back pain, or losing your mucus pluglabour might be close!

Can You Help Your Baby Engage?

If your baby hasn’t engaged yet, don’t panic—some don’t engage until labour starts! But if you’d like to encourage baby into position, here are some things that may help:

✅ Walking & upright positions – Gravity can help baby’s head move lower.
✅ Bouncing on a birth ball – Gently rocking your hips can encourage engagement.
✅ Leaning forward positions – Avoid lying back for long periods, as this can make baby sit higher.
✅ Pregnancy yoga & pelvic tilts – Helps open up space in the pelvis.
