Pregnancy advice often comes with a long list of things you “should” do—and somewhere near the top is usually “count your contractions”. You’ll hear it from books, apps, and sometimes even health professionals. They say, “When your contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute each, for 1 hour, it’s time to go in!” In this blog I’m going to explain why not to count contractions.
But here’s the truth… counting contractions is a complete waste of time.
Not only does it cause unnecessary stress, but it also doesn’t tell you anything useful about your labour. In fact, focusing too much on contraction timing can actually make your experience harder, not easier.
Let’s talk about why contraction counting is outdated, unhelpful, and what you should be focusing on instead.
1. Contractions Aren’t the Best Way to Measure Progress
One of the biggest myths about labour is that contractions follow a neat, predictable pattern — starting far apart and slowly getting closer together. Then, ta-da, baby arrives!
Reality is a little messier. Labour doesn’t usually work like that.
💟 Regular contractions can sometimes last for hours without much change to the cervix.
💟 In other labours, irregular tightenings suddenly shift into full-blown, active labour.
💟 Contractions may be close together right from the very start for some people.
💟 Stop-start patterns can stretch over days before labour properly establishes itself.
Contractions alone aren’t a reliable measure of how far along you are. Focusing too much on the clock can either give you a false sense of progress — or leave you feeling like you’re failing when you’re absolutely not.
2. It Creates Unnecessary Stress
Here’s how it usually goes:
👀 A contraction timing app is downloaded.
⌛ Every twinge is logged.
📱The app tells you “Go to hospital now!”
🏎️ You rush in, expecting to be nearly there…
👩🏻⚕️ The midwife says “You’re 2cm dilated, go home.”
😡 Enter frustration, exhausted, and deflation.
Or, even worse—your contractions aren’t forming a perfect pattern, so you start panicking. You wonder, “Why aren’t they every 5 minutes yet? Is something wrong? Is my body not working properly?”
Counting contractions can make you feel like labour is taking too long or that something is “off.” In reality, your body is doing exactly what it needs to do.
3. It Takes You Out of the Moment
Labour works best when you feel safe, supported, and connected to your body. But guess what can interrupt that natural flow? Constantly staring at a timer on your phone. Analysing every contraction and worrying whether they’re following the “right” pattern can do more harm than good.
💟 Breathing through each contraction becomes harder when you’re fixated on the numbers.
💟 Relaxation between contractions gets swapped for checking your app.
💟 Tuning into your body takes a backseat while tuning into your phone takes over.
Your body already knows how to labour — you don’t need an app to tell you whether it’s working. Trust yourself. That’s why I’m telling you: not to count contractions!
4. Midwives Don’t Even Use Contraction Timing That Much
You know who doesn’t sit there with a stopwatch counting contractions? Experienced midwives.
When a midwife is assessing whether you’re in established labour, they’re looking at:
✅ Body language — are you breathing through contractions or struggling to talk?
✅ Coping ability — are you calm between surges, or are they overwhelming you?
✅ Instincts — does it feel like things are picking up?
✅ Physical signs — has your mood shifted or are you feeling new pressure?
A good midwife will listen to you rather than just watching a clock.
So What Should You Focus On?
Instead of getting obsessed with contraction timing, use these signs to decide when to call the hospital or midwife:
☎️ Call your midwife if:
✅ You are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or finding it hard to cope.
✅ Baby’s movements seem reduced or unusual, and you’re worried.
✅ Bleeding of any kind occurs.
✅ It’s time for some extra support or you’d like pain relief.
✅ You simply want to check in and chat with someone!
☎️ Go in sooner if:
⚠️ Intense pressure in your bottom makes you feel like you need to poo.
⚠️ A sudden urge to push comes over you.
⚠️ Contractions feel overwhelming and hard to manage.
⚠️ Your waters break and the fluid looks green or brown.
Forget the 5-1-1 rule. Your body is a better guide than any app.
Final Thoughts
Contraction timing is one of those old-school labour myths that just won’t die. The reasons I advise not to count contractions:
💜 Labour isn’t a numbers game. Some people dilate fast, others take longer—both are normal.
💜 Counting contractions doesn’t predict anything. Labour is unpredictable, and that’s okay.
💜 You don’t need to stress about a perfect pattern. Your body will let you know when things are progressing.
💜 You are the best judge of how your labour is going. Trust your instincts.
