4 weeks pregnant embryo – early fetal development

If you’re 4 weeks pregnant, you might just be finding out. Whether you’ve taken a test or you’re waiting to see what happens next, week 4 is where things quietly begin — and your body starts making big moves behind the scenes.

Let’s talk about what’s happening inside your body — and what you might be feeling (or not feeling) right now.

🧬 👉 What’s happening when you’re 4 weeks pregnant?

At Week 4, if fertilisation happened, your embryo is now a blastocyst – a tiny ball of cells no bigger than a poppy seed, and it’s just nestled itself into the lining of your womb. Many people don’t even realise they’re 4 weeks pregnant until they notice something feels slightly different.

That’s implantation. And it’s kind of a big deal. This is when your body kicks into hormonal gear, and HCG (the pregnancy hormone) starts rising. It’s the hormone that pregnancy tests detect – which means this is about the time that you might get a positive result.

💡 When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

If your cycle is regular and you’ve missed your period, you might already be seeing those two little lines.

🔍 Testing early? Use a sensitive, early detection test (and test with your first wee of the day).
⏰ Not quite due yet? Waiting a few days can avoid the “is that a line or am I hallucinating?” limbo.

🤔 What Are the Symptoms at 4 Weeks Pregnant?

Here’s the fun part: maybe nothing at all. Or you could be feeling everything.

Some early symptoms people report around Week 4 include:

Cramping or a tugging feeling in your lower tummy

A little spotting (implantation bleeding)

Feeling tired or a bit emotional

Boobs that feel like they’ve been in a boxing match

A strong sense of “something’s different” – even before the test confirms it

But if you feel absolutely fine? That’s normal too. Read more about pregnancy symptoms here

🩸 What’s Implantation Bleeding?

Some people experience a small amount of spotting around the time implantation happens – usually a bit earlier than their period would be due.

It’s typically:
✔ Light pink or brown
✔ Short-lived (a day or two)
✔ Not heavy like a period

If you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing is your period or something else, you’re not alone — Week 4 is a common time for confusion, especially if your cycles are irregular.

🧠 Feeling All the Feelings?

You might be:
😱 Excited
😳 Shocked
🥺 Terrified
🙃 Totally unsure what to think

All of the above are valid. You’ve just found out your life is changing (even if you’re not telling anyone yet), and it’s normal to feel a bit wobbly. Take your time to let it sink in. You don’t have to have all the answers right now.

💜 Things You Can Do This Week

If you’ve had a positive test or just think you might be pregnant, here’s what you can do now:

🥗 Start (or continue) your folic acid

If you’re not already taking it, now’s the time. You want 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, ideally along with vitamin D.

🐣 Start tracking how far along you are

You’re officially four weeks pregnant even though it’s only been around two weeks since conception. (Pregnancy maths is wild – we count from the first day of your last period, not from when you actually conceived.)

📞 Book in with your GP or midwife

You don’t need to rush to hospital or book a scan just yet – but it’s a good idea to let your GP know so they can refer you for your booking appointment, usually around 8-10 weeks.

🧴 Early Care Tip: Look After Your Skin

Hormones are beginning to shift and while stretch marks are still a way off, some people like to start using a gentle, nourishing body oil now as part of a little daily ritual — especially if your skin is prone to dryness or itchiness.
