Pregnancy Week 29: What to Expect This Week
You’ve made it to Pregnancy Week 29, and while the finish line still feels a little way off, your body and baby are very much in “getting ready” mode. Things might be feeling a bit more snug, a bit more breathless—and possibly a lot more emotional.
Let’s take a look at what’s going on this week.
Baby at Pregnancy Week 29
At Pregnancy Week 29, your baby is about 38cm long and weighs around 1.2kg. They’re starting to look and behave more like a newborn, just with a bit more growing and fattening up to do.
What’s happening inside:
Muscles and lungs are maturing
Baby’s bones are hardening
They can blink and may react to bright light
Their brain is developing rapidly (hello, future genius)
They’re starting to form memories—your voice is already familiar!
Baby is probably moving a lot, and while it can feel intense, regular movement is always a good sign. If movements slow down or feel unusual, always get checked.
Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 29
Pregnancy Week 29 often brings a mix of excitement, discomfort, and random crying at supermarket adverts. You might experience:
Shortness of breath
Tiredness (growing a human is exhausting)
Heartburn or indigestion
Backache or round ligament pain
Swollen feet or hands
Restless sleep or vivid dreams
Midwife tip: Try gentle stretches or a warm (not hot) bath before bed to ease body tension. And if you’re waking up every two hours? Welcome to the warm-up round.
What to Do at Pregnancy Week 29
There’s still time before your due date, but now is a great time to start planning and prepping—without overwhelming yourself.
Book your antenatal classes if you haven’t yet
Start talking about birth preferences with your partner or midwife
Order your colostrum harvesting kit (you’ll use it from 36 weeks onwards)
Think about postpartum support—who’s on hand, what help you’ll need, what you can delegate
Begin gentle pelvic floor exercises if you haven’t already

Honest Midwife Thoughts
Pregnancy Week 29 can be a strange mix—you’re clearly pregnant, but people still say “Not long now!” when you’ve got 10+ weeks left. You might feel calm one day and totally overwhelmed the next. It’s all normal.
This week is about building knowledge, support, and confidence—not perfection. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, each pregnancy is different, and your questions are always valid.
We’re here for the real talk, the reassurance, and the “what actually happens” behind all the fluff.
