Pregnancy Week 30: What to Expect This Week
Welcome to Pregnancy Week 30—the start of the serious countdown. You’ve officially entered the “how-is-there-still-10-weeks-left” stage, where everything starts to feel a little more real. Your bump is growing, your energy might be dipping, and your thoughts may be turning more and more toward labour and birth.
Let’s break down what’s happening this week.
Baby at Pregnancy Week 30
At Pregnancy Week 30, your baby is about 39cm long and weighs around 1.3kg—about the size of a cabbage (we know, we said no fruit and veg, but we’re running out of relatable objects).
Here’s what’s happening developmentally:
Baby’s brain is getting more complex—wrinkles are forming to make space for all that brain power
Eyes are opening and closing, and baby may react to light
Bone marrow is now producing red blood cells
They’re swallowing more amniotic fluid to practise digestion
Baby is also starting to develop sleep and wake cycles—though they might not sync up with yours just yet (sorry).
Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 30
The third trimester has properly kicked in now, and your body is working hard. At Pregnancy Week 30, you might notice:
Shortness of breath – your lungs are getting a bit squashed
Heartburn – everything’s a bit squeezed up
Braxton Hicks – your uterus is rehearsing
Tiredness or even bursts of nesting energy
Backache or pelvic discomfort
Mood swings or vivid dreams
Midwife tip: If you’re struggling with sleep, try propping yourself up with pillows or using a pregnancy wedge under your bump. Small changes can make a big difference.

It’s a great time to begin thinking seriously about how you want to feel in labour—calm, informed, and in control. That comes from knowing your options, understanding what’s normal, and having a few helpful tools in your back pocket.
