Pregnancy Week 27: What to Expect This Week

Pregnancy Week 27 is your final stop before the third trimester—and if you’re feeling a little bit tired, a little bit emotional, and a lot over it, you’re not alone. This is the week where things start to feel bigger: your bump, your emotions, your snack requirements… all of it.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening this week.

👶 Baby at Pregnancy Week 27

Your baby is now about 36cm long and weighs just under 1kg—that’s about the size of a head of cauliflower (we know, we know… we didn’t invent the vegetable analogies).

Here’s what’s going on inside:

Their lungs are developing rapidly, preparing for that first breath

Eyes are opening for the first time (and baby can respond to light)

Brain tissue is growing fast—hello, mental leaps

They’re starting to show facial expressions, and you might even see some in a scan if you’ve got one booked

And yes, they’re still kicking, stretching, and rolling around like a little gymnast.

🤰 Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 27

Your bump is front and centre now—and so are the symptoms that come with it. This week, you might notice:

Back pain or rib discomfort, especially if baby’s moved into a favourite position

Swollen ankles or feet, especially later in the day

Constipation (thanks, progesterone and baby’s position)

Restless legs or general tiredness

Stronger Braxton Hicks contractions—tightenings that come and go without pain

Weird dreams, mood swings, or emotional wobbles (totally normal)

💡 Top tip: Gentle movement (like walking or pregnancy yoga) can really help with stiffness and swelling, even if you’re not feeling especially flexible right now.

📅 What to Do at Pregnancy Week 27

This is a great week to take a little pause and start prepping for the next chapter.

✅ Book in your 28-week midwife appointment if you haven’t already
✅ Start looking at antenatal classes—early third trimester is the sweet spot to begin
✅ Check in with your employer if you’re working and haven’t finalised maternity leave plans
Start a list of what you might need for labour, feeding and those early newborn weeks
✅ Look into colostrum harvesting (especially if you have GD or are at risk)—we have a kit for that below!

💬 Honest Midwife Thoughts

Pregnancy Week 27 can feel a bit like the Wednesday of pregnancy—you’re far along, but not quite near the finish line. Energy might dip again, especially if you’re not sleeping brilliantly.

Now’s the time to start topping up your knowledge, boosting your confidence, and giving yourself permission to rest. Baby is doing lots of growing and so are you—mentally, emotionally, and maybe even spiritually (depending how many cushions you’ve ordered off Etsy).
