Pregnancy Week 24: What to Expect This Week

At Pregnancy Week 24, you’re officially at viability—which means if your baby were born now, they’d have a chance of surviving with medical support. That’s a big milestone, and it often brings a wave of mixed feelings: pride, relief, nerves, and maybe a sudden urge to reorganise your entire house.

Let’s look at what’s happening this week.

👶 Baby at Pregnancy Week 24

Your baby is now about 30cm long and weighs roughly 600g—about the size of an ear of corn (but significantly cuter).

Inside the womb this week:

The lungs are developing, forming the air sacs that will one day help them breathe

Baby’s skin is still translucent but starting to gain colour and texture

Their facial features are more defined, and they’re practising facial expressions

The inner ear is developing, helping with balance and orientation

And yes, they’re moving loads—rolls, jabs, kicks, and full-body wiggles

You may even notice they react to loud sounds or music—time to test your playlist?

🤰 Your Symptoms at Pregnancy Week 24

With your bump growing rapidly, you might be noticing a few more physical changes now:

Backache or pelvic discomfort, especially by the evening

Tiredness despite that second trimester “glow”

Heartburn, indigestion, or bloating

Stretch marks may start to appear

Increased appetite (baby is bulking up!)

Leg cramps and restless legs, particularly at night

💡 Top tip: Try a warm bath followed by a gentle foot and leg massage before bed using our Pregnancy Massage Oil or Thankful Ankle Oil. It’s not just great for your circulation—your sleep might thank you too.

📅 What to Do at Pregnancy Week 24

Now’s a great time to start gently preparing for the third trimester—and beyond.

✅ Attend your 24-week midwife appointment (this is usually the point where they start measuring bump growth)
✅ Book your spot in antenatal classes – starting around 28–32 weeks is ideal
✅ Look into hypnobirthing, especially if you’re feeling anxious about birth
✅ Start gathering bits for baby, or make a list of what you actually need (hint: it’s not 14 swaddle blankets)
✅ Think about booking some time off just for you—before third trimester fatigue kicks in

💬 Honest Midwife Thoughts

At Pregnancy Week 24, it’s common to feel like you’re floating between two worlds—baby is very real, but still a few months away. You might feel physically uncomfortable and emotionally excited, all at once.

This is a great week to begin thinking about how you’d like to give birth—not in a rigid “birth plan” way, but more in terms of learning your options and building confidence. The earlier you start, the more time you have to let it sink in.

It’s also a good time to check in with your partner or support person. How are they feeling? Are they up for joining you in a class or two? (We promise it won’t be awkward.)
